Default mouse problems

I have a gateway laptop with windows vista and I have been having problems
with it ever since I got it about a month ago. When I am doing something on
my computer and have my cursor sitting somewhere in the middle of a paper or
sitting on the taskbar it will click where it is sitting and then if I am
typing a document and I don't notice that it clicked there I have to go
through and delete everything and hope that I can remember what it was that I
had typed. Does anyone know how to fix the problem I have tried everything
from turning on hovering and turning it back off to changing the mouse
settings.
