I was late in activating my copy of Vista Ultimate, it went into RFM and now
that it's activated, it still won't come out of RFM, I even installed SP1 in hopes that would bring it back. What else do I need to do to get my desktop and functionally back, this program cost me to much money for it to be so screwed up like it is. Can someone please offer me advise on how to get my computer out of RFM? Another problem while I'm writing this is, my computer's Task Manager is grayed out, how can I activate it so it can be used? Thanks for your help and/or advise in advance. |

This tutorial may help you get out of it. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/12...lity-mode.html Hope this helps, Shawn -- Brink *There are no dumb questions, just the people that do not ask them.* '*VISTA FORUMS*' (http://www.vistax64.com) *Please post feedback to help others.* |

Thanks for the reply, I looked over the information you sent and read your comments, I agree, Vista should not be in RFM once it is activated. I paid over $400 for Vista Ultimate and I be damned if I buy another Product Key from Microsoft for a product that should work out of the box. If I reinstall I lose all important data if I don't back it up or move it, that ranges right now nearly 750GBs, It won't do an upgrade so I don't lose my stuff, it want to do a clean (new) install, one of my friends did that and Vista wouldn't accept his Product key again, told him it was for Windows Server 2008, or if wasn't a valid key. All I want is to get my desktop functions back. I've never been so disappointed in a product as I am Windows Vista. Since I've install SP1 that nullifies the RFM if I'm reading these comments correctly. Like so many others before me, Apple MAC is looking better and better, never hear any problems with their OS, as it stands today, I'd never recommend Vista to my company or our clients, it's a nightmare. I'll work this out or trash this mess, write it off as a bad experience and move on to a more reliable OS. Again thanks for the advise, sorry for the rant, but this is quite frustrating Regards |

Sorry for the delay in responding, to answer your question, it was Brand New out of the box. And for some reason my Task Manager is grayed out and will not work, that also sucks. I've been using Microsoft since Windows Version 1 came out, Vista has got to be the worst I've ever come across. Stan |

Stan Stan, For the Task Manager, this tutorial may help you on that. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/10...e-disable.html Since this is brand new, you might consider taking it back to where you got it and tell them to fix it for free or exchange it for another one. A new computer should not do this. It has always been my understanding that stores will not take back software once it's been opened after leaving the store, the computer works fine, I was referring to the software when I said "It should have worked out of the box." Anyway is there a way to by-pass the WINLOAD.EXE I have tried all the things you suggested. I keep getting the "ACCESS DENIED" statement when U attempt to do the BCDEDIT or any of the other methods mentioned in the several different forum idea you've sent. Can I delete the WINLOAD.exe file and let Vista rebuilt it, or can I copy one from another working copy of Vista and does it matter if it is the version? I have access to a copy of Vista Home Premium I can use to get a copy of the WINLOAD.EXE the only thing I see that might be a problem is, the path to where Vista Ultimate is installed is different. Worth a try Hmmm! I can recreate the WINLOAD.EXE using the method you suggested, copy it to the Ultimate and then restore the original copy, that should solve the problem. Stan |
