Default cd tray error

Just recently I have been "blessed" with the same thing.

Although it might be the CD player at the end of the day, it's still a
bit too intermittent and seem to be related to a read-request.
I can suddenly see how the read LED is flashing. Sometimes it just
flashes and then nothing.. other times it spits out the tray. When
manually pressing the eject button, no LED is flashing indicating that
there's no dodgy microswitch playing up

I first saw it after running iTunes and importing some music. It would
suddenly stop and spit out the tray. At first I thought it was just a
bad cd, but when it started happening even with no CD at all I got
suspicious.

I have not found a culprit yet, although I would probably opt for
replacing the bugger anyway.
