External USB Optical drive causes Vista to hang
I have a IDE to USB2.0 external optical drive and when I plug the USB into my
Dell Vostro laptop, Vista Home Premium hangs until I unplug it. While it is hanging, I can not open any programs, install or remove any drivers, etc. As soon as I unplug it everything returns to normal. I have tested the hardware on an XP system and it works just fine. I have also tried a different optical drive/enclosure on my laptop and it does the same thing. I attempted to install hotfix KB944292 (32-bit) although it says it is not compatible with my system. Upon initial setup, the operating system finds and installs the driver without any problem. But as soon as it finishes and I reboot, it doesn't work. I have attempted to change the optical drive jumpers settings to every possibility without sucess. Please help! |
