Default How do you stop the auto sound adjust levels?

A friend of mine was complaining that his sound levels kept jumping when we
did instant messages with video call. We both thought it was his laptop as
he could not fix it. I have just recently bought a laptop and have found the
same problem. I cannot find a way to stop the sound level bars from
adjusting when the microphone detects any sound at all. Is there a way? Or
is it just someting I have to live with??? As it it really off putting and
annoying because to hear the other person, you have to wait a few seconds!!
What is that about?? Hope theres a solution to this.... thanks in advance
