Default Movie Maker crashes with timeline

Running Vista Home Premium, with the built in Movie Maker ver. 6.

After dragging an AVI clip to the storyboard, in timeline mode, the
moviemaker crashes if I try to do anythingwith it. The message is: "Data
Extraction Prevention stopped the program..." When I tried to change the DEP
settings to allow running the program, I was not permitted.

On some other occasions there is another message: "Another user is running
Movie Maker...." There was only one window open at the time.

The computer is new, Vista is updated automatically.

I also tried to shut down some of the filters in Movie Maker; no use.

Any suggestions?

What's the fault information for that DEP crash:
http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#bucket
?

This indicates that your AVI codec is bogus.

Speaking for myself only.
See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
