my cd/dvd player just stopped working. I'm 2 months past my 1st year and of
course Compaq suggest a 176.00 replacement device. I tried deleting upper and lower filters, uninstalling/reinstalling hardware, nothing seems to work. Any suggestions???? desperate!! |

"Stopped working" is pretty vague. If the drive is toast, you might try searching for a 3rd party replacement. Depending on the age of your Compaq (I'm assuming it's a laptop?), the drives have become somewhat generic. If it's a desktop and your drive is a standard 5 1/4" form factor. Replacement/upgrade will cost you a small fraction of the Compaq quote. When I pull up the hardware, it says the device is working, Icheck for
updates and receive message that the latests updates have been installed. Yet the system does not recognize any cd or dvd that is loaded. (ex.. with dvd inserted into drive, I pull up dvd play and ecieve message to insert dvd. yet again my system says this device is working properly. What gives??? cleanman "PvdG42" wrote: "cleanman" wrote in message ... my cd/dvd player just stopped working. I'm 2 months past my 1st year and of course Compaq suggest a 176.00 replacement device. Troubleshooting tip:
Get an USB external cd/dvd burner, plug it in and see if that works. If it does then that eliminates blaming the Vista OS and trying to reconfigure files, etc. The device manager might recognize the dvd drive which means that the computer and the external device (dvd burner) are communicating. But it doesn't necessarily mean that the dvd has the abiltiy to burn anymore. If this is a laptop we're talking about, and if you've burned 100+ dvd's and cd's, then the burner is most likely toast. The DVD burners in laptops are not very hardy. -- oscar ....Right click is your best friend...
