Default Vista name resolution issues (nslookup OK, ping/ie bad)

Hi

I've been running vista business ok for a while now but last week something
changed and now I am unable to get name resolution to work correctly.
Nslookup returns sensible results but ping or IE to a domain name do not
work. Ping and IE to an IP address are ok. I have changed dns servers and
internent connections but that doesn't make a difference. Other machines on
the networks that I connect to are OK. The following shows my problem (!) :

Default Vista name resolution issues (nslookup OK, ping/ie bad)

No I am not running Zone Alarm. I did have AVG 7.5 installed. I did have
VMWare Workstation 6 installed, I did have a Nortel VPN client installed.
I've uninstalled all of those but its made no difference.

Once I am back on the internet, I am going to have to spend a good while
reinstalling software to make the machine useable again.

Regards

Quentin

There are no entries, apart from the default in hosts file. Not sure what you
mean about a clean boot. Are you suggesting a reboot? I have done that quite
a few times so far :-(

If I am understanding the results of ifconfig /displaycache, then any
entries that I had placed in hosts, would have been displayed in the output
from this command.
