I have a few video files that play ok on my XP Windows Media Player 11, but
not so well on my new Vista Windows Media Player 11. I can hear but not see ..avi files, and cannot even open (or even view properties) on mpeg Movie files. How can I solve this problem? Thanks. Bill |

You need to download the codecs package for vista. Try here; 'Free-Codecs.com :: Download Vista Codec Package 4.7.1 : With Vista Codec Package installed, you won't need to install any other codec or filter.' (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...ec_Package.htm) -- roy69 - Core 2 Quad Q6600 - Abit IP35 Pro - 4 x 1GB OcUK PC2-6400 C5 800 MHZ Dual Channel - Leadtek GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB GDDR3 - CiBox TFT 22" Widescreen LCD Panel. 1680 x 1050 - Creative X-Fi 7.1 PCI-E - Antec 900 Ultimate Gaming Case - Creative Inspire 7.1 T7900 Speakers - Corsair HX 620W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Complient PSU |

If downloading codecs doesn't work, download Gom PLayer and use that for
video files that WMP11 can't play. http://www.gomlab.com/eng/GMP_download.html There are old video files out there that WMP11 on Vista can't handle. Get GOM and save yourself the aggravation. It's free and safe. -- oscar ....Right click is your best friend... Thanks roy 69. Just knowing it is a common codec issue and not something
more serious is most helpful. Bill "roy69" wrote: You need to download the codecs package for vista. Thanks Oscar. A separate player for those old video files is probably a good
idea for someone like me who doesn't understand a lot about codecs and fears getting stuck in some kind quicksand. Yes, I have at least two video players on my computers. On my XP's I have 3
different players. In the long run it's quicker to switch over to a player that will play the file than try to find a fix. I had spent hours (3-5) hours trying to find a fix for those video clips that won't play on WMP 11 Vista. And I found no satisfying answer of the problem. Bottom line is that Vista WMP 11 look at video marker/headers differently than WMP 11 XP and sometimes cannot play certain video files. It has nothing to do with codecs. No one can explain why. And I think the only people who know are the original programmers and there are no MS tech notes coming from that group. Good luck with GOM. -- oscar ....Right click is your best friend... ? What video clips won't play on Vista? This isn't black magic. =) -- Speaking for myself only. See http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html for some helpful WMP info.
