Default Managing External Hard Drive - "You'll need to provide administrator permission"

Hello everyone. I'm hoping that someone here will be able to help me in
this predicament.

Ever since I shifted to Vista, it's been a very different experience
compared to XP. It certainly feels a lot more stable and faster (believe
it or not!), but productive-wise, I find it a tad too protective.

Off to my issues. The first one being an issue regarding using an
external hard drive. I have a Seagate 500GB external drive that I use as
my main workhorse. There's a lot of files on it that I've accumulated
over the years, and I haven't been the tidiest of people.

One of the reasons I purchased the big hard drive was to undertake that
massive project of re-arranging all my photos, music, and documents in a
manner that I could pass on to my kid.

Alas, this was not to be. There are two particular issues that I have
with Windows Vista.

1. Every time I try to do an action, say move or rename a file or
folder, I get the message: *"You'll need to provide administrator
permission to (move/delete/rename/etc.) this (file/folder)"* or *"You
need to confirm this operation."* (afterwards the usual UAC screen comes
up asking for your permission). This only happens on files that are on
the external hard drive.

2. I always use one "view" in managing my files.
_*Detailed_View_sorted_by_File_Type*_. I cannot for the life of me, find
a setting where in this "view" is the default for all folders that I
look at. Some times when I go to some folders, the thumbnails look like
huge candies!

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium. The external hard drive was
bought after I got the laptop. I have tried doing a mass edit of the
attributes of all files and this has not helped me. I have tried running
Windows Explorer "As an Administrator" and the freakin' O.S. still asks
me to "provide administrator permission". I've also tried changing the
permissions to "Allow" for "Users" on the External Hard Drive under the
Computer Management tool. Again that did not do the trick.

I literally have thousands of folders with hundreds of files on a lot
of the said folders and the first time I tried soldiering through the
process almost made me insane.

Well I'm exaggerating but you get the point.

I just want to move/rename/delete my files in peace.

Any help is welcome, and if you have an answer, I will be most
grateful.

Thank you for reading.

I agree with the overprotective descriptive. I would suggest turning of UAC
at least temporarily when you have to do work like that. it's in Control
panel- user accounts and family safety - user accounts- turn UAC on or
off. You may get a security warning in the notification area of the task bar
but you can ignore it or turn it off till you are ready to turn UAC back on.
you have to restart windows to change the setting so do it when you star
toyur session and it should help.
Also in windows Explorer which opens your folders look under 'organize'
menu and 'folder and search options' and there's a 'view' tab in the box that
has a button that says "apply to folders" using the current view to all
folders of that type, and / or in the advanced settings list on the same tab
there is a checkbox for 'Remember each folder's view settings' and that
should prevent you from having to do all that useless 'dialog' with the
machine.
I hope this was a help.. i'll continue searching for an answer for my hard
drive issue ( it Western digital Passport won't shut down properly) which has
got to be here somewhere.. in microsoft.com... right?
Good luck !

You know what, I've never really thought of just disabling the UAC. I
will try doing just that, and report back here if that's a good
workaround.

I had the same problem. Here's what worked for me:

Log in as administrator. In -my computer-, right click on the external
drive, and choose -properties-, -security-, -advanced-. Then edit the
permission entry that covers users, or the specific user to whom you
want to give access, such that their permission type is -full control-.

AS WHAT?

To whom are you talking and about what?
The "forum" that you are posting in leaches off the Microsoft News servers
in order to make it look far busier than it really is. Everyone who uses the
MS News servers sees your post on it's own - we have NO IDEA what you are
talking about and to whom you are talking.

This is not your fault - the fault lies with the forum owners who do not
explain to members that their posts end up on global Usenet newsgroups.
If you MUST continue to post in this "forum" then please at least quote the
post you are replying to, and do NOT change the subject line.

You would be far better off however, using a news reader and subscribing to
these news groups direct.
