Dear "lostinla"

What model and make would the laptop be?
also what OS is the laptop running?
and doe's the computer recognise the drive in device manager?
also, does your computer seem to be running slower than usual?

Tom Rogers.

try these steps to see if it resolves the issue.

open a notepad & copy paste this into that:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}]
"UpperFilters"=-
"LowerFilters"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Cdr4_2K]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Cdralw2k]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Cdudf]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\UdfReadr]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Cdr4_xp]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Cdudf_XP]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\UdfReadr_xp]

And save the notepad as cdgone.reg And make sure you save that on the
desktop then right click on it & then click on merge.

This should neutralize all the conflicts the operating system has with
the optical drive. If this fails then try to boot using the windows
vista dvd. If it boots then optical drive is fine it is an corruption
with the operating system. If it does not work then get the drive
replaced. :geek:
