Default Vista using only one core on core2 duo cpu

Recently my hard drive took a surge and stopped booting, even though I
could still get to the files. I reloaded Vista onto a new SATA drive,
imported the files from the old drive, and all was well. Except, Vista
now only uses one core on my dual core cpu. I have looked at this with
two cpu monitors, and they both show zero usage on core 2 and core 1
often staying at 100% for an alarming amount of time. I have swapped the
SATA drive out and put in another one with Vista on it, and it runs both
cores. But when I put the main SATA drive back in, we are back to only
one core. So, there is some setting somewhere in Vista that is keeping
it from using both cores. Does anyone know how to fix this?

TIA,
Stan

Have you tried setting the number of cores?

I had the same thing happen 6 months or so ago when I did a clean install of
Vista. All I did was re-install Vista again and Vista picked up the 2 cores.

If you think about it, the drive you have just re-installed vista on doesn't
acknowledge that your PC has two cores, yet another drive with Vista
installed does. The drive doesn't determine how many cores are on the CPU
the BIOS and, in turn, the Operating system does. The dual cores re
obviously working okay otherwise the second hard drive containing vista
would not show them as working.

Thanks. When I go to the Boot Advanced Options and click on number of
processors and then on the processors drop down menu, the only choice is
1. I hope there is some way to get Vista to see both processors.

Check this, about halfway down the page:
'New Core 2 Quad, X64 sees all 4 Vista Ultimate sees 2 Help'

Does that help?

No. Device Manager, System Information, and any other utility that gives
you an account of your machine all say that they see the two cores.
However, Vista NEVER uses core2. I know something strange happened when
I reinstalled Vista because the cpu rating in the Sys Info window went
from 5.9 to 4.6. Clearly, even though Vista sees both cores, it is set
somewhere to run only one. Aargh! I really like Vista, but I am about
ready to join the salivating LINUX people!

Your MOBO BIOS probably has a setting to enable one or both cores so check
it..
Do you have the CPU gadget enabled in Vista so you can see the usage of each
core?
If you only run single threaded applications then the second core will never
be used unless background services cause it to be since they are also
running.

Now Vista is working with both cores. I kept going in to the advanced
options of the boot tab under msconfig and checking and unchecking
things. At first the processor drop down had only 1 cpu as an option.
Eventually though the second core started working and there is now the
option for 1 or 2 cpus on the processor drop down. I wish I could
pinpoint exactly what I did, but I think it had to do with either the
detect HAL box and/or the debug box. Anyhow, thanks for the help.

Guys i have reproduced the problem and solution.

Goto MSconfig and then advanced boot options.
Uncheck the box with numbers of processors.
Then check HAL Detection.

Leave the rest as is was.

Then reboot your pc. Vista now recons all of your cores

Then goto MSconfig once again and check the number of processors you
want ern uncheck HAL then save your settings.

Here you go
