Windows Media Stops Working with DVDs
Hi zach, No solutions but under additional: Follow these steps to troubleshoot problems with ffdshow codec Did those steps without any help. Interesting that ffdshow is mentioned - is that still on the system? It might be good to temporarily disable or pull off the filters. Windows Media Stops Working with DVDs
zach, Thanks for your reply. Since my last post I uninstalled ffdShow. I also used the regsvr32 command to unregister msmpeg2adec.dll since that is what show fault-I hope I did not make big problem. Now when I try to play DVD the player does not crash but stays open but get the small wind pop up that cannot play the DVD and to try and change Window display settings. This doen't seem to help. If I try to play with Media Center I get Decoder error message that decoder is either malfunctioned or not installed. Before both would crash trying to play DVDs. If I use AlShow player that I downloaded from 'ALTools Free PC Utilities - Free zip/unzip, ftp, movies, pictures, photos, password managment' (http://www.altools.com/Default.aspx) the DVD can be played. If I try to play mpg file WMP will play sound but only visual effects with actual video. A: Please don't decide to unregister system dlls on Vista. Vista DLLs generally aren't intended by registered by hand - all of that registration code moved into the component manifests, so who knows what badness you'll do by hand-registering DLLs. B: Reregister that file, please. I have no idea what state you'll be in, but it's better than where you are. C: Where did AC3filter.ax come from? Can you uninstall / unregister / remove that? D: I distrust your system in that you have a pirated Microsoft codec on there. Anybody still including that codec in their package is way way out of date and I no longer trust your computer. Most codec packs are pretty brain-dead at heart, so a pack that includes a hacked codec from ~98 scares me. -Zach -- Speaking for myself only. Windows Media Stops Working with DVDs
Thanks zach. Registered the dll without problem. The AC3Filter came from download link provided by forum moderator on 'www.altools.com' (http://www.altools.com) site. This was suggested since I had no audio on .avi and .mpg files when played which this solved. I uninstalled as you suggested and am back to no audio. Playing .avi with WMP has video no sound. Playing .mpg has audio but no video-only visual effects. Playing DVDs player opens but has popup window that cannot play and to adjust Windows display settings. My computer ASUS does not have Vista DVD but Recovery CD and I am not sure if can do repair of this issue without complete reinstall. I would not have started all this but had the problems.
