New hard drive installation, complete nightmare
It would seem that you have the drives set up as RAID. Possibly, there is no
driver installed for it in the Operating system. You will have to install the appropriate driver, partition as desired and format. Possibly, an appropriate driver is on the CD or DVD that came with the motherboard. Possibly, you will have to download one. Just a note about posting if setting up for NNTP- You will have to set up an E-mail account in the NNTP newsreader software. Possibly Windows Mail. -- Tom MSMVP 1998-2007 "J1mmy" wrote in message ... Hi R. C. White, I attempted to use the newsgroup but it wasn't sending my messages through, but I can explain what was in the attachments. With regards to the other posters, I doesn't appear the motherboard has any special way of dealing with the drive. The array was built and was reporting healthy in RAID. With SATA the drives were reported and SATA enabled. There is not any further configuration than just enabling and disabling SATA. The drives are only acknowledged in the following locations, whether or not they are actually acknowledged as drives is a separate question, but they are seen as devices connected nevertheless: * Safely remove hardware - the drives are listed here, they are NOT assigned with any letter. * They are in device manager under Other devices and have a question mark next to the drive. All attempts to update the driver fails, online and on the PC. They ARE NOT seen in disk management, My Computer or any where else that allows the user to interact with them I have looked into the the foreign drives and other related issues, but help expects the drives to be there already and wants the user to right lock on them. The drives are NOT listed in Diskpart either. I shall test it out in Safe mode and report back. I installed XP on one of the drives and as far as I can remember, all the drives were listed there. I formatted the drive and went ahead with the installation keeping the other drive intact, as soon as i switched back to Vista (with the drive Still connected) the same problem was there. So this isn't a format issue by the looks of things either. Thanks. -- J1mmy |

New hard drive installation, complete nightmare
Hi, J1mmy.
OK. I can read that page and see that .jpg. But I'm not sure I understand it. I never saw a "Safely remove..." line for any HDD! Is this HDD on a USB port? Perhaps you said that somewhere in this long thread, but I missed it. I've never had a USB HDD, internal or external. I've had several other USB devices that get "drive" letters, such as flash drives and an SD card reader. For those, I've used Disk Management to right-click on the drive and choose Properties, then the Policies tab. Here, I've chosen Optimize for quick removal, rather than Optimize for performance. This disables caching so that all writes happen immediately, letting me just "pull the plug" whenever I want, so the "safely remove..." message never appears at all. That may not be the best setting for a USB HDD but, as I said, I never had one of those so I won't try to advise anyone about that. But with that information, perhaps someone here can offer more help. I'm an accountant, not a techie of any kind, so all I know is what I've experienced and what I've read about. RC -- R. C. There are many Unknown devices listed. If one of these is the device for
which you need a driver to access the disks you will not see the disks until the driver is installed. You should install drivers for these devices before proceeding. I think you may have defined the disks as part of a RAID array but not completed the configuration of the array. In your BIOS, check that all your SATA controllers are enabled and RAID is disabled for them. You should then see the disks in Disk Management after booting. You would probably be best advised to ask these configuration questions in the ASUS forum for your motherboard. "J1mmy" wrote in message ...
