Folks, Ive managed to get my 5536 build into a state of no return.
Using the latest version of Free Download Manager, which appeared to install and operate fine under 5536, I was downloading a 350mb video file. I was downloading the file in a threaded way to max out my download speed on ADSL2+. FDM crashed, and I couldnt get it to restart on that file so I downloaded the same file again. FDM added a (1) to the filename, being filename(1).avi within the c:\user\(mylogon)\Downloads directory. Now when I go into that directory, the machine has a hernia scanning it. I can't delete the original file. I cant move the original file. I cant display properties. Explorer.exe eventually crashes as per below. I have triple checked the file system with scheduled chkdisk with enabled fixes. It reports no file problems. If I go into a command prompt the file system does not list the file as existing despite explorer showing it there. I have no way short of wiping the partition to get rid of it!!!! ouch The hassle is I need to access this directory. Hello,
Make sure UAC is disabled. If it is not press WinKey+r, type in msconfig, then go to tools - disable UAC then click launch, then restart. After you restart try to access the folder again. If you still cannot access the folder, enable the local administrator account. To do this press winkey+R, then type in control userpasswords2, go to the advanced tab, then click the advanced button. When the MMC opens click on users then right click on Administrator, click on reset password and assign a strong password to the account, then open the properties for administrator and uncheck the account is disabled box, click apply then OK. Restart the machine in safe mode and login as the administrator and attempt to access the folder. If you are still having problems post back here and I suggest you file a bug report even if you get it fixed, because it is a explorer.exe related crash. Thanks Tom
1. Disabling UAC didnt work, still crashed. 2. Booting into safe mode as admin the file is not listed within the directory 3. Returning back to normal mode, as normal user, file is still there and problem persists |

Hello Anon,
Try this.... Open My Computer and browse to the folder where you are trying to save the file. Right click on the folder and click on Properties. Then go to the Security tab, then click on Advanced. Then go to the owner tab, and click Edit. Then select your user and then in the lower left hand corner check the box that says 'Replace Owner on Subcontainer and Objects' and then click apply. It will change the ownership and then after it is done, close out of all the properties windows and try to delete the file. Thanks Tom.
I reported the incident to MS. In an attempt to see if the issue can be replicated on 5552 I've gone to that and since lost the data on that partition. Time will tell if I can replicate it. |

This still happens on build 5552. Dammit.
Trying to change owners, it just hangs on that window. Much the same as trying to delete it. The windows will come up, but it will just thrash the cpu / disc, and wont respond. Entering the directory where the file is kicks off the thrasing of disk and cpu as the green highlight slowly goes over the progress. |
