Default DVD not working after failed SP1 install

6 days ago I had a Compaq notebook (6720s) that was working OK, although USB
functionality was pretty random.

Then I tried to install Vista SP1 as offered by Windows Update. The install
failed. 2 different System Restore points also failed.... Terrific.

Now the system no longer shows DVD drive in My Computer or Computer
Management, but
it shows in Device Manager as not working, no drivers.

I've tried the Upper and Lower Filters fix that everyone seems to suggest.
No good.

The DVD drive is a Mat****a UJ-860H. It spins and tries to read media so
it's not dead.

Help needed please anyone?

Andy

Did you try to update the drivers for the drive through device manager ?

Yeah, Device Manager shows the drive with the yellow exclamation mark, and
says no drivers installed. Before the attempted SP1 update it was fine so I
guess the install somehow trashed the drivers.

When I try to "Update Driver", it fails with an error message as follows:

"Found driver software but encountered an error whilst trying to install it.
Roxio cdr4
System cannot find the file specified".

I believe the Roxio file is something to do with CD/DVD burning software,
and I know it is present in the drivers directory.

Does this help?

Andy

in control panel, programs and features, uninstall all things roxio and
sonic.

After competely uninstall, go to device manager, right click the optical
drive, choose uninstall.

Reboot. On reboot windows will reinstall the default drivers

Dead right! That's fixed the problem completely. Many thanks for that, I
was on the point of giving up.....

Do I need to re-install the Roxio and Sonic stuff, and will I lose my drive
again if I do?

been gone for a bit....

Do you need to? No. You can burn almost everything you need to with the
built in windows features. Other needs can be filled by better
programs--mostly free--as you need them

Sonic and Roxio have a long history of dubious quality and problems like the
one you experienced

In that case I will ignore Sonic and Roxio.

Hate to burden you further, but when you say built in Windows features,
where do I find that stuff?

The button in Windows Explorer that says "Burn" does not seem to do
anything. Do I have another problem, or am I doing something wrong? I'm
selecting folders, or files and hitting the "Burn" button, and absolutely
nothing happens.

Can you suggest anything?

Supplementary that may be useful. When I insert a writeable disk into the
drive, should I not get a dialogue box offering various things I can do with
that disk? Nothing happens.

It seems to me something is not quite right.

I can play music CDs and use Windows backup to write to the disk.
