Hi, Hoping someone may be able to help me with this. I bought the Vista Ultimate Upgrade from ebay and received it today, but i'm having trouble upgrading my XP Pro machine. I go through the install process and there are no conflicts or anything, i've uninstalled Norton. When it reboots the first time after starting the installation i'm getting a blue screen that says "A problem has been detected and Windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer" Underneath this it has: *** STOP:0x0000007B (0x80599BB0 0xC0000034 0x00000000 0x00000000) I'm not experienced really with computers so I have no idea what this is or how to fix it so i can upgrade to Vista. Any help would be appreciated, thanks. -- Eyeon ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Eyeon's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/eyeon.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/vista-set...ll/1022152.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

Hi,
0x7B is INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE, meaning that setup cancelled because it cannot access the drive. Is this a sata or ide drive? Was a manufacturer's driver loaded as part of setup (if not, you may need to)? -- Best of Luck, Rick Rogers, aka "Nutcase" - Microsoft MVP http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/ Windows help - www.rickrogers.org My thoughts http://rick-mvp.blogspot.com "Eyeon" wrote in message ... Did you run the MS Upgrade Advisory for Vista that tells you if the machine is capable of running Vista? http://www.microsoft.com/windows/win...e-advisor.aspx Trying to upgrade from one version of the O/S to another one to save data or not having to re-install existing programs on the machine doesn't work out to well with a lot of trouble. Upgrading Vista to another version of Vista is ok. But coming from XP to Vista may be another story. I like to format the hard drive and install the O/S fresh to avoid potential problems. I hear you can install the O/S fresh with the upgrade install DVD too. |

With some computers, not all, Vista installation has trouble when you have a
mixture of drives (IDE and SATA). Normally, I'd recommend you unplug the drive that is not going to have the OS installed on it while you install Vista, but your are performing an upgrade. This would result in broken links to anything on your second drive. If it is only data on the second drive, try unplugging the second drive. If it involves programs, that you don't want to have to re-install, then you'll have to wait for another suggestion. Good luck! "Eyeon" wrote in message ... I tried to redo the upgrade with the sata drive not attached and received the same error. Does that mean it's probably the ide hdd causing the problem? -- Eyeon ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Eyeon's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/eyeon.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/vista-set...ll/1022152.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

It is something related to drivers, not the drive. (Unless it is an older
IDE drive that needed ATAPI.sys support.) You can try installing to the SATA drive, or go into BIOS and disable the SATA support until install is done, or install SATA drivers from USB during the install, or set the SATA drive to work in IDE mode. It's been almost two years since I had this problem and now I only restore images. I do not re-install from scratch, so... but for me, I updated the BIOS and unplugged the second drive. Everything worked fine after that. MS gives the following advice of which only the last two for 0x7B usually apply: (and seems to coroborate my experience with this problem.) http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935806 "Eyeon" wrote in message ... I am having the same problem, only I wasn't installing Windows Vista. My
computer came with Windows Vista. Anyway, last might I shut down my computer, letting it install two updates. This morning, the computer just can't start without launching startup repair or having a blue screen with the exact same error or STOP codes. I even let startup repair use system restore, and used system restore manually. Nothing helps. I have disconnected all periperhals. It still is being stubborn. HELP!
