Card Reader Drives Showing in My Computer - Too Many
I installed a card reader with slots for everything. I only use SD. I don't
want to see drive letters for every drive not in use. Can I do this? Also, how can I pin down certain drive letters for my USB drive, so it gets the same drive letter everytime I plug it in? I need this, as I have back up routines that look for certain drives and paths. My back ups are getting screwed up after I add and remove external storage devices. -- Thanks |

Card Reader Drives Showing in My Computer - Too Many
Hi, garywi.
I don't know about the excess drive letters, but Disk Management is the built-in tool for managing many aspects of hard drives - plus other devices (such as card readers, digital cameras, etc.) that also get "drive" letters assigned. There are many ways to get to Disk Management, such as to right-click on Computer and choose Manage, then Disk Management under Storage. But this way always makes me feel like I'm peeping through a keyhole. :( I prefer to just press the Start key and type diskmgmt.msc and press Enter. Either way, you'll need to furnish the Administrator password. Once DM starts, Maximize the window so that you can see what you are doing. You can assign the letters you want here and Vista will try to use the same letter each time for each device. (My SD card reader has only a single slot, so I don't know about the multi-slot features. But you can right-click on a drive | Change Drive Letter and Paths | Remove, and see if this does what you want.) You also can right-click on Disk 4 (or whatever number your card reader is) and choose Properties. On the Policies tab here, you can choose between Optimize for quick removal or Optimize for performance. Choose quick removal and you'll never need to wait for the "Safely remove..." icon again, because Vista will write everything to the device immediately, rather than put it in the cache - where it could get lost if you unexpectedly pull the plug.
