Restore Vista backup files to an XP machine?

Default Restore Vista backup files to an XP machine?

I have been using Windows Backup to secure files on a Vista Home Premium
laptop to a disk on my XP desktop. Three days ago the laptop fried its
mainboard and is now in hospital. Of course we are all hoping for a speedy
recovery, but meantime all the files are tucked away in .zip's in a tree of
folders.

Any way of using XP to restore the files into a structure that users can
navigate?

apparently is an event that few of us, unlucky guys, have and therefore not
worth of much attention.
I've found this hint helpful, at least to restore the most important things,
while waiting for the recovery from the hospital:
