Default Microsoft Laser Mouse 8000 Cradle Problems

My problem i faced was with the laser mouse 7000. it has only a single
NiMH AAA. Every time i would go to charge it, after 10-30 seconds it
would start blinking red. I eventually used it to the point of needing a
critical charge and still had this problem. Working with NiMH high cap
batteries in the past gave me a simple idea, do a high amp discharge on
the battery for a short time. (connect a wire to each electrode or use a
resistor) This fixed my problem (I had tried the checking the battery
contacts, etc). I imagine what the problem was is known as a false peak
where the battery when applied current to charge false peaks for a short
period of time before or during the charge. Cheap chargers cannot handle
this and a possible solution can be to (near) fully discharge the
battery to level out its voltage.
**Do not leave it to discharge TOO long, you can reverse the polarity
of the cell**

I think this is the answer, 8000 or 7000 model, I believe they use the
same charging circuit..
The problem is that the battery falls below the chargers ability to
recognise the cell. The charger starts charging and then fails because
it thinks the battery is either not there or too flat to see it. There
can be 2 issues here, the battery terminals are dirty or the battery has
become too flat.
Solution - wiggle everything and wipe everything cleaning all terminals
including the battery. For very flat batteries, switch the mouse to OFF
and start charging, it will probably turn red and flash, reset the mouse
into the cradle and start charging again, this may happen 2,3 maybe 20
times.. Eventually the light will remain slowly flashing green and
charge.
It surprises me that such a simple totally avoidable issue in
development from microsoft has slipped through.

I have this problem and solved it.
I took and emery board ( nailfile) and used it to lightly roughen both
ends of the battery.
Dropped it in the cradle and away it went!!!

I think that over time the surfaces develop a film the interfers with
the charging cycle.

I hope ot works for others.

I had trouble with the battery not depressing the micro-switch underneath it
so I taped a paper clip to the bottom of the battery cover to put more
downward pressure on the battery.

Default Microsoft Laser Mouse 8000 Cradle Problems

Hi, imon.

This reminds us old-timers of the "Pink Pearl treatment" that is at least as
old as the first computers, probably. I first encountered it with the
original TRS-80 back in 1977. The Pink Pearl is a popular brand of rubber
pencil erasers; we accountants were WELL acquainted with those! We
especially liked the one with a gray end, which was tougher than the pink
end so that it could even erase most inks.

When our TRS-80 started giving us random errors - suggesting problems with
hardware, not software - we would unplug cables from the motherboard's edge
connectors and "erase" the corruption on their little gold fingers. When we
plugged them in again - Poof! - like magic, the errors stopped.

After you roughen the ends of your battery, you might also see if you can
use an eraser - and perhaps some electronics cleaner on a Q-Tip - to remove
any dirt, film or corrosion buildup from the computer's own posts that
contact the battery.
