Hello All, I am having a issue trying to network a vista desktop and a xp laptop wirelessy. It does not communicate other than a simple ping. I have run into this scenario backwards and it takes right off the bat. For whatever reason it will not allow to share anything to the laptop but other Vista Pc's take right away. I thought I tried everything maybe someone knows another technique. PLease Help (This is my Head cracker) -- jhartnett305 |

Have a read of the info below.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb727037.aspx Have a read of the above link re Vista File and Printer Sharing. Permissions/Share info is there as well. If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall (or LAN allowed, depending on how their Exceptions are worded in their Firewall) 1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is the SAME. In Vista Network and Sharing: Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers) Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc) File Sharing: ON Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared Docs) Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and passwords (passwords can be different) on ALL computers in your Network) If you have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to access a Vista computer from an XP computer, or a Vista computer. Also, run the XP’s Home or Small Office Network File and Printer Sharing Wizard to include Vista in your “New” Network, even if you had an XP Network set up prior to adding a Vista computer to it(redoing the Wizard seems to work for XP machines!). In “My Network Places”: “Set up a Home or Small Office Network” OR under Accessories Communications Network Setup Wizard Allow File and Printer Sharing. -- Mick Murphy - Qld (Sunshine State) - Australia "jhartnett305" wrote: Hello All, I am having a issue trying to network a vista desktop and a xp laptop wirelessy. Hi
Successful Sharing involves some general consideration in Network settings, http://www.ezlan.net/sharing.html As well as specific adjustment of each computer according to what it is allowed to be shared. Vista File and Printer Sharing- http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb727037.aspx Windows XP File Sharing - http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;304040 Printer Sharing XP - http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...utt_july2.mspx Windows Native Firewall setting for Sharing XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875357 Windows XP patch for Sharing with Vista - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922120 Jack (MVP-Networking). Hi, In addition to Jack's post, I think there are a couple of things that might help - I assume you are using xp home on your laptop? First, xph's name for the network workgroup ( by default ) is Mshome, which is different from Vista's, which is Workgroup. To change xph's to match. Right click MyComputer, click Computer name Change, then in the workgroup box, type in Vista's network name ( which is Workgroup by default ) Ok it, then Ok the box that pops up and restart. You will need to install Link Layer Topology Discovery Responder on your xp laptop ( Vista already has LLTD ) and restart. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en Your xp laptop should then be accessable on your Vista Network Map. Go to the Network and Sharing center, View full map. Hope this helps SIW2 -- SIW2 |
