I've got a black screen that is telling me I'm missing the followong
file:

ntoskrnl.exe

It won't start normally in safe mode or any other mode.
What does this mean for me and the future of my files? Thanks.

Hi,

It means you should reinstall to a new folder without formatting. That would
be a critical system file, and if it can't be loaded there is little you can
do. There is a possibility of a problem with the registry, so loading the
last known good configuration from the boot menu might help. Otherwise, you
can reload without formatting to preserve data files (the old installation
will be moved to a windows.old folder as long as there is sufficient space
on the drive).
