Default RAM Issue

I recently purchased a new hard drive and decided to do another upgrade
as well, an additional 2gb RAM (total 3gb). I purchased the same type
of RAM and specs as I have been running for the previous 2-3 years in my
PC, PQI model PQI25400 2 gigs, PC2-5400 1GB Dual Channel.

After installing Vista, I received every RAM related BSOD in the book,
which include all the page in a non page area, irq, and "memory
management". I thought all these errors were on VISTA itself, but I
decided to get a little creative.

I removed the new RAM and left in the 1gb on its own. VISTA ran fine!
I decided to remove the 1gb and swap it for the new RAM, a total of 2gb.
VISTA runs fine. When I put them all together, I begin to get the RAM
errors over and over again. VISTA will only survive a max of 5 mins
before doing a memory dump.

Is there an issue with running 2 1-GB chips and 2 512-MB chips
altogether? I would like to run with the 3GB since I have it, but is
this not possible?

FWIW the motherboard is a gigabyte 8i945p, I am running a Dual Core
2.8ghz, and I have an evga nvidia 8800GT with 512mb.

I see that u are trying to use dual channel memory... but for it to
work, the right module must be inserted in the right slot... I'm sure if
u have a look at the manual u would get all the info u need.

Try looking up the section of installing RAM in the manual. There they
will have numbered the slots where u would need the RAM placed so that
dual channel will work without errors.

Default RAM Issue

Many MOBO have trouble supporting 4 memory dims depending on the speed and
voltage available to the memory.
As I understand you you have 2 5400 512 MB Dims and 2 5400 1GB Dims. Is that
correct?
Check your MOBO documentation to see if it will accept 2 pairs of DDR2
memory.
Very likely you will have to just use the 2 1GB Dims.

It's real simple and explains it right in the manual...

(it is recommended to use memory modules of identical brand, **size**,
chips, and speed)

(DS: Double Side, SS: Single Side) is important too.

BTW - PQI is cheap ass mongrel ram. Stick with known certified ram.

Also, RAM is not the same RAM as you bought 2-3 years ago.
RAM manufacturers buy the cheapest modules that they can, to produce it.
The numbers are the same, but the internal set up is different.

These days, better to replace all RAM from the same batch
