Default Installing Vista Home Premium 64 bit Upgrade

Ok,

First off, I purchased Vista Home Premium 64 bit Upgrade from Windows
Marketplace, without knowing that I needed a 64 bit OS currently to run
the setup. So, after I got that cleared up, I thought, maybe by getting
the DVD I can clean install. Well, apparently you can clean install with
the upgrade versions by bypassing the product key step in the beginning
and tricking it into thinking you already had Vista, but it doesn't work
with XP Home still installed. Anyways, my question is this: If I'm
running Windows XP Home and I were to Format my main hard drive, could I
potentially be able to boot from the Vista Home Premium 64 Upgrade DVD
and install it using the trickery method?

Any help with this please, I don't want to be stuck forking out $145 on
something that doesn't even work on my machine. I tried to send it back,
but they refused because I had already received the contents.

Oh, and yes, my system is 64 bit capable.

yes,
just bootup from the dvd and do a clean install without the key.
but then you have to reinstall vista again and this time do upgrade and
use the key so you can
activate it.

You don't have to use the key on the second installation. It's
best not to activate until you are satisfied with the installation,
or have made subsequent hardware changes. You are allowed
30 days to activate, which can be extended 3 times. Having no
product key will prevent inadvertent activation before you are
ready. When you later start the activation process it will ask
for the product key. I did it that way and during that period
Windows Update accepted my 64 bit Vista Ultimate installation
as genuine, even without a product key. As a matter of interest,
if you don't enter a product key, the installation will provide a
default one, which will not activate.
