Default Vista updates uninstall Atheros WiFi adapter on new laptop

After having to System Restore 3 times I figured out that somewhere in
the 31 Vista Updates an action is deleting my Atheros AR5007 802.11b/g
WiFi Adapter. It just disappears from the Device Manager listing. Any
ideas??
thanks!

I suspect what is happening is that you have your Windows Updates set to
Automatic and you're getting an "update" for your wireless adapter. You
don't want this.

Control PanelWindows Updates

You'll see where you can change settings. Provide authentication to the UAC
prompt when asked. Now change your WU settings to "download and let me know
when they're ready" (I'm paraphrasing) instead of Automatic. When updates
are ready, you'll see where you can examine what they are. Uncheck/hide any
driver updates.

To get your wireless adapter back with the right drivers, install the
drivers from the computer mftr.'s tech support website for your specific
model machine.
