Default Installing from ultimate 32bit OEM to x64 ultimate?

Do i have to do a clean install here? If so, does anyone know a step by
step instructional ? Also, what's the best way to backup my entire
system? Gamer and don't want to have to rebind keys and such. Sorry, one
more Question, can i use the x64 ultimate twice? Building new rig.
thanx

Default Installing from ultimate 32bit OEM to x64 ultimate?

Hello and welcome to the forums, arty:

Sorry but I think you will find that to install X64 you have to de a
complete re-install preferably including a format of the partition, and
will then have to re-create all your applications and such like. if you
have the drive space you could load to a separate partition and then
transfer files from the old install to the new and then delete the
original install (licence restrictions would apply once you install x64)

it may be possible to backup your individual game keyboard bindings etc
but that would be dependent on your games themselves having the option
to do this.

As to backup the easiest is to copy your documents and where possible
application configuration files to another hard disk (internal or
External). when you then install X64 you can copy back the original data
to the relevant places.

Due to the change from x86 to x64 architecture an image type backup
will not work, there are simply two many changes to the way things work.

as to the two copies question the rule is One Licence per Copy unless
you have a multi seat licence.

Hope this helps

Yes a clean install is required.
Boot from the DVD, format & install.
You'll have to back up your preferences for each game, all games keep that
data in different places so you'll have to do some research.
You can't use your license twice, same as almost any other version of
Windows, this question is as old as Windows itself.

Yes. It is not possible to perform an in-place upgrading from a 32-bit
OS to a 64-bit OS.

If so, does anyone know a step by

Simply boot the computer from the installation DVD and follow the
on-screen prompts.

Also, what's the best way to backup my entire
system?

There'd be no point to backing up the "entire system," unless your goal
is to restore the original 32-bit installation. For that, a partition
imaging utility, such as Acronis True Image, would be best.

All of your applications (those that are 64-bit compatible, that is; I
presume you've already verified this) will have to be re-installed from
their original installation media. The only files you'll need to back
up are those data files that you'll want to use on the new installation.
For that purpose, burning them to a CD or saving them to a thumb drive
will suffice.

Gamer and don't want to have to rebind keys and such.

You _might_ be able to do this using either Vista's Easy Transfer
Wizard or the User State Migration Tool, but you'd best contact the
manufacturer(s) of the game(s) in question to see if they've provided a
way to transfer customizations from one installation to another.

This is a bit unclear: Are you thinking of having the single
license installed on two machines simultaneously, or serially? You need
to purchase a separate Vista license for each computer on which you
install it.

Now, if you purchase a retail license for the 64-bit Vista Ultimate,
you're permitted to remove it from the first computer and then install
it onto a new machine. If, however, you buy the much less expensive OEM
license for the 64-bit Vista Ultimate, it will *not* be legitimately
transferable to a new computer; that's why it's so much less
(relatively) expensive.
