Default MS Comfort Optical Mouse 3000 magnification doesn't work in Vista

Help! I have the Vista Home Premium version, I believe (just purchased
5 months ago) and yesterday bought a MS Comfort Optical Mouse 3000
(new). It has the magnification functionality where the button on the
left-hand side is supposed to magnify highlighted text. But I have
tried this on Notepad, web pages, OpenOffice, with no luck. The
software was loaded with success. Does anyone have any ideas?
Frustrating! I highlight text and then click on the left-hand button,
however when I do that it no longer allows the cursor to be moved, and
does not change the view on the page. Thanks!
