*Problems with activation* I recently tried to upgrade to* Service Pack 3* on *Windows XP* - however on doing this, it corrupted something and when trying to boot, the 'computer' (http://www.vistax64.com/#) would constantly become stuck on the -'windows is starting'- screen (as if just prior to your username being visble with its password box beneath it) I tried on multiple attempts in vain to go back to a previous restore point as well trying to restore from a recovery disk, all to no avail. I tried to boot up in safe mode but all attempts would end it being stuck on blue screen or suggesting a complete reinstall of windows via a 'boot disk' (http://www.vistax64.com/#). I therefore thought, rather than revert back to service pack 1 and faff with all the upgrades and such, to buy an upgrade to *Vista home premium.* This worked lovely - but I was unable for some reason to put the activation code in its box so therefore deferred it. Windows itself (on its box) suggested a clean install may be required, which is what I had to do (since was unable to get onto windows XP desktop to install via that route) However, the blasted computer is saying that the activation code is for an upgrade (which I know) an is therefore unable to activate. However on some occasions it says that the Product key is in use!! I still have the previous copy of windows, conveniently put into a folder called windows.old by vista installation itself!!!!, but 'vista' (http://www.vistax64.com/#) does not seem to appreciate that I have ever had it and therfore thinks I should not be entitled to an upgrade I had Windows 'XP Professional' (http://www.vistax64.com/#) 64 by the way Any suggestions please???? -- jimsaf Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |

Read the link above on how to do a clean install from an upgrade disk. Then redo it. -- Mad Mike "jimsaf" wrote: *Problems with activation* I recently tried to upgrade to* Service Pack 3* on *Windows XP* - however on doing this, it corrupted something and when trying to boot, the 'computer' (http://www.vistax64.com/#) would constantly become stuck on the -'windows is starting'- screen (as if just prior to your username being visble with its password box beneath it) I tried on multiple attempts in vain to go back to a previous restore point as well trying to restore from a recovery disk, all to no avail.
