Default Installing Vista on HP with Recovery Disk

Hi

I'm not sure if my last msg posted, but I'm trying to use a purchased
and legitimate HP recovery disc of Vista Ultimate x64 to reinstall the
OS on a formatted HD that originally had the OS on it. I could really
use some help. I've been told by multiple people working for HP (not
just customer service, but tech's as well) that this is possible.
When I use the recovery DVD it opens some application type thing with
one button/option - which I'm guessing puts the files on my computer.
Upon doing this, it formats the HD, puts a lot of files on 25 gigs of
it (and leaves the other 50 or so as unpartitioned dead space) and
looks like completely useless files. I did notice that there seems to
be an image of the os. And I read somewhere that I should be able to
mount that image to install the OS. Any help please? Thanks
