barman58;856174 Wrote: Hi sandcracker, What that article is saying is that you need to replace any dll files that are shown in the file. and giving you the instructions to be followed in the Administrator CMD prompt that you've used before, that will enable these files, which are normally protected, to be replaced. as you have to source these files to replace the corrupt ones the easiest method would be a working copy of vista of the same type (Home, Ultimate with or without SP1 etc) if you have access to another machine. If you cannot do this this link may help you find the files you need. 'DLL-files.com - Download all your missing dll-files.' (http://www.dll-files.com/) Unfortunately, if you have a lot of files this will be a rather involved process, and with a lot of files it may be easier to perform a repair install. ![]() 'Repair Install For Vista ' (http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/88...all-vista.html) Hope this explains things i am not 100% comfertable deleting and reinstalling system files, should I do the repair install you have listed? it seems pretty straightforward. Will this remove any of my games/saves? Or much more importantly my music collection? -- sandcracker21 |

Hi sandcracker, I'm not comfortable messing with system files and I've been doing it for more than 25 years , but seriously, the repair install should not affect any of your personal files including your music, It should also leave any games intact with settings and saves. I use "should" in the above as their is never a 100% certainty that something will not go wrong. I would advise that you backup anything and everything you may need in case anything goes wrong. you may need to check with games manufacturers or forums as to what exactly you need to save to retain saves and settings for individual games. As for the actual process I would suggest that you print out the tutorial and read it completely before you begin, if you feel that you are confident enough to proceed then set aside a few hours to do this, it won't take that long but you don't want to rush this sort of repair operation, when you have read the instructions if you are not sure of anything then post a question at the end of the tutorial and I'm sure you will get a specific answer. This option is I think a lot safer that the option to replace DLL files and am sure all will go well, as long as you follow the turorial exactly. If after all considerations you do not feel comfortable then it may be better to contact a local professional to do the work. Hope this helps and good luck whatever you decide if you need any more advice please post back and will do my best to help. is getting late here now so will have to go off-line for a bit but will check back tomorrow -- barman58 Regards, *Nigel* the beginning of knowledge is the discovery of something we do not understand.,- frank herbert |

Take your computer to a professional computer repair shop (not a BigComputerStore/GeekSquad type of place) and have them retrieve your data and diagnose/fix your computer. There is no shame in doing this; we all have our areas of expertise. Malke -- MS-MVP Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic! FAQ - http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/#FAQ |

Buy an external hard drive or start burning CDs/DVDs. you can check around for a computer club in your area.
check library and schools. someone there will probably be able to help you for a LOT LESS $ than a computer store. plus it will give you contacts for help in the future. Hello Sandcracker, other than the suggestions from the other posters, if you have a large primary hard disk with space spare you could create a second partition and use this as a temporary backup location. This would not be a long term solution as if the disk ever failed it would of course effect both your main and backup partition. there is a good step by step here ... 'Zolved - Can I create a new Drive or Partition in Windows Vista?' (http://www.zolved.com/synapse/view_c...indows_V ista) hope this helps -- barman58 Regards, *Nigel* the beginning of knowledge is the discovery of something we do not understand.,- frank herbert |
