Default Can't upgrade from Vista Basic to Enterprise

I am trying to do a simple upgrade from Vista Basic to Vista Enterprise. I
have tried to do the install from within Vista and by booting up with the
DVD. However, I get the same message either way -

"Upgrade has been disabled. You cannot upgrade from Windows Vista Home
Basic to Windows Vista Enterprise. You can upgrade to Windows Vista Home
Basic, Windows Vista Home Premium, Windows Vista Business, Windows Vista
Ultimate."

I have researched this endlessly and can't find any answers. I would prefer
not to do a clean install. Any help is appreciated.

Hi cuzzi,

The info. I have on Upgrade paths available for Vista SKU's is that you
can only "upgrade" in the sense you mean from Home Basic to Home Premium
or Ultimate.

Other editions may be an upgrade in the general sense of the word, i.e.
changing to a higher edition, but they require a "clean" install.

You could use Windows Easy transfer to ease the process. Transfer files
and settings from your existing install ( i.e. your "old computer" ) to
an external hd - not sure if you can transfer to another partition on
the same machine. Then transfer them to your new install i.e. your "new
computer".

Did you purchase an upgrade license from MS and get a new install dvd?

Hope that helps
