Default USB Memory stick stops working

When I plug a 4Gb USB memory stick into a USB socket on my PC I can see the
files on the device. When I try to open them it won't. The next thing is it
doesn't even show they're there and properties shows the device as empty.

Any way of 'repairing' it?

Does the device behave the same way on other computers? If yes, it is
failing and should be replaced.

Yes with 4 different PC's, trouble is I've hardly used it.

Then you have your answer. It doesn't matter if you've "hardly used it".
It's dying. Return it or just throw it out. You can buy a 4GB USB flash
drive from NewEgg for under $20.
