PC connected to router by cable
Cable Modem connected to router by cable.
This AM lost connection to the net. Tried a number of things. The ones
that matter are
Connecting the modem straight to the PC results in net connection.
modem to router to PC gives no connection.
I changed all the cables connected to PC, router, modem. Still no net
connection unless the modem is hooked straight to the PC. Turning
on/off the firewall makes no difference. My inclination is to suspect a
bad router. BUT, I am not certain.
I also have a network printer hooked up to the router.
With the router hooked up as usual, I can print to the network printer.
I can view the router setup page on the PC.
Is it possible for the router to 'fail' as far as modems are concerned
and to be OK for other network functions?
I presume the modem and PC work since I can get a net connection.
Changing all cables made no difference.
Any other tests/suggestions welcome.

Can the router be bad? Yes.
Can the router provide Local Area Networking (your printer) and not manage
Internet connectivity? Yes.

Sounds to me like you should replace the router.

While connected through the Router check the Router's WAN port configuration
make sure that it set correctly as per your ISP. If the ISP uses a MAC
number for authentication make sure that the computer's MAC is cloned to the
MAC entry ( http://www.ezlan.net/broadband.html ).
If No valid external IP is obtained when every thing configured correctly
then you probably need a new Router. I had in the past few of this specific
Routers (it is rather an old model) that stop fetching the external IP.

Well, that appears a waste of money. New router - same problem.
No internet connection unless the modem is connected straight to the PC.
What now?
