reboot loop not with updates
I am not sure what happend to my computer but it is stuck in a reboot loop. I just received my computer on September 30th from dell. I am running Microsoft Windows Vista SP1 Home Premium Edition. here are some additional specs Inspiron 518, Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2.4GHz, 2x4MB) 3GB DDR2 SDRAM,800MHZ- 2X512MB,2X1GB,DIM,M Radeon HD 2400 Pro Graphics Media Card 500GB Serial ATA II Hard Drive(7200RPM) I had my Zune plugged in and was checking if the pictures had downloaded when the zune shut itself off and froze up. My computer did not recognize that the zune was connected so I decided to restart my computer. At this time the computer seemed fine. After I restarted it would not boot back up. it loads the dell screen, beeps then starts over. I tried running a startup repair from the disk, and an upgrade, neither has solved the problem. Any ideas would be very helpful. the only information I can find regarding a boot loop is with people installing vista over xp, or installing the service pack 1 for the first time. Thanks! -- cindydorfsmith |

reboot loop not with updates
Hi Cindy, The startup repair you tried, I presume you booted in from the dvd ? Are you able to get into Safe Mode ? Usually you press F8 after the bios screen, but before Windows starts loading. ( check your manual ) A clean reinstall from the dvd would likely do the job. Dell have been sending reinstall dvd's that seem to be pretty much straight copies of the MS dvd (with some ranges anyway). If you have one of these, you may be able to save your existing files into a folder called Windows.old. To do this , when you get to step 10 of the tutorial, do not select Drive Options ( advanced ) and do not format the partition. Simply click on the partition you wish to install Vista and with any luck , it will ask if you want to save all the files currently on that partition into a Windows. old folder. You will then be able to access them from your new Vista installation. You will still need to reinstall your apps. and set up the o/s as before. http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/11...-version-vista. Hope it helps SIW2 -- SIW2 |

reboot loop not with updates
I did boot the repair from the dvd. I tried to get into safe mode, but no matter when I pressed f8 during the starup window, I could not get in. I will try a clean reinstall, but my fear is why this happened, and will it happen again? Since it is a brand new computer, I would think that this would not happen out of the blue like it did. Thanks for the advice -- cindydorfsmith |

Before you go down the clean install route, I would take the side panel off
and check that all components are all plugged in correctly and not worked themself loose. Also remove all but one stick of RAM and see if it boots up, If it doesnt remove that one stick and replace with one of the ones you have taken out an see if it boots. If it does then you have a fault stick of RAM and will need to contact the supplier. "cindydorfsmith" wrote: I did boot the repair from the dvd.
