Default Is 50% CPU Usage normal with nothing else running

When I start up my computer, the general percentage of CPU usage is around 50%. Sometimes, when running several web sites, one or two software applications, and then open AOL my email source, I get 100% usage. I can close AOL, and it will then go down, but others times the software I am running my keep it at 100%. That software I use most often is Family Tree Maker.

I can go to the process tab and open it up and find nothing out of ordinary when it starts up, but do see the high useage when AOL or FTM are open. Once I close them and then reopen FTM, once the percentage goes down, it is find.

Why such a high precentage on start up or during normal useage of the computer. Did not notice when computer was new the amount of useage, so am unsure if this came on after loading software or was normal. I have stopped some things from running on start up, but am afraid to touch much of it for fear of making things worse.

Thanks in advance for any help someone can give me.

I have several issues with Vista and will start with these.

1) When dumping a directory/file to the recycle bin, the recycling 1
item box will come up and not go away. I end up having to go to the
task manager and close it that way. I can hit stop or the "X" to close
the box and it just changes to the "canceling" box and doesn't close
it.
This also happens when you move files from one directory to another.
The files move but the box doesn't go away.

2) When renaming a directory, file, or new folder Windows Explorer
locks up. You again have to use Task Manager to close the activity.
The files does get changed and will show when you reopen WE.

You're the same bozo who screwed up your computer with Combofix,

No, Registry Mechanic will *NOT* fix anything. But it may well make
any problems worse.

*NO* registry cleaner does anything useful.

I have tried Registry mechanic and had to remove it due to more problems than it was worth. Any other ideas out there?
