Just ran into this after getting my new laptop and trying to transfer files from the desktop to the laptop. Problem: Connecting to a shared folder over the network is insanely slow. After initial connection everything is fine. Details: Desktop machine has C:\ root shared out as \\Desktop\C. Laptop accesses share via Start, \\Desktop\C, [Enter] (ie. connect to UNC path via start menu). The folder then takes 15-20 secs to appear on the laptop. BTW, Desktop is running Vista Ultimate. Laptop is running Vista Home Premium. Both SP1. Work around: And... this is the crazy part. If you access the share as \\Desktop\C\ via Start, \\Desktop\C\, [Enter] (note the trailing back-slash), the folder comes up instantly!!! Note: I ran into similar delays when I used a shared printer (connected to the desktop machine) from the laptop. 15-20 sec delays connecting to the printer, bringing up its properties dialog, printing to it, etc. From searching the internet discovered a workaround where you install the printer as a local printer but set the "local" port to the UNC path of the printer. I post this message in hopes that someone will know the true answer why and offer a better solution and that my work around may provide someone else a relief from frustration with this issue. -- RehabMan Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |
