Add an IDE HD to a SATA Vista64 Set-up
 

Hi,

New to the Vista world and I recently upgraded from an older computer.
Now I have an IDE HD that I would like to add to my set-up.

My problem is that my MD does not have an IDE connection. I have a lot
of pictures that I need to retrieve. I am not computer expert, but have
no problems adding components. Is there a certain controller card or
adapter I can use that is compatible with Vista?

I'll appreciate any advice.

Hello WS67A02,

You could get a SATA to IDE adapter to connect your IDE hard drive to a
SATA port from places like the link below or a computer specialty store.

However, it may be easier if you have a friend that has a system that
you can connect it to, then you could just copy the files to DVD(S) on
your friends computer and from the DVD(s) to your computer.

Buy an external USB case for it. Cost is minimal.

Make sure you get the right kind for your drive. Probably need IDE
for a 3.5" drive (just guessing).

New SATA drives are better than any IDE so my advice is this:

1. use SATA drive as your permanent HDD

2. get SATA-to-USB adapter like this:

and use it to copy all your pictures to the SATA drive. An USB
connection is slower, true, but no more than 2-3 times. I use this
particular adapter with many computers and drives because its chipset
allows me to utilize SMART (with proper software, which is not free
unfortunately) and that's not quite common when it comes to the USB
adapters. For longer copy sessions I employ an USB-powered fan because
the 3.5" drive likes to get HOT.

Vista is seeing the controller in the external drive only.
Your hard drive is either not correctly connected to the data cable and/or
power supply in the external case or your hard drive is defective.
My experience with other people's Toshibas has not been promising: I have
seen too many hard drive failures in these laptops.
