Ok, I'll give you guys an idea about what's happened. I've an Asus m50s
Laptop. I had Vista 32bit and 64 bit on two separate partitions, on the same
hard disk.
The IDE configuration was set on " Enhanced" in my Bios.
I wanted to install XP 64bit onto over my Vista 64 bit. Once i booted from
the disk. it read
"Couldn't detect a harddisk" So i read up on some forums and told me to
change SATA options. Understanding very vaguely i decided to go into my BIOS.
I found something similar called IDE Configuration. And i set the settings
from Enhanced to Compatable.
This allowed the XP disc to read my hard disks and start installing. - first
i deleted the Vista 64 bit partition and then formatted and installed. All
went well then it said it had to restart.
Expecting the Installation of XP to come up i find a black screen with a
white underscore at the top left blinking. Nothing happens.

I've tried Deleting the partition..
Changing the IDE config back to Enhanced.
All these don't seem to work. Someone told me to place the XP disc in and
repair with FIXBOOT and FIXMBR but im afraid this will mess with my 32bit
Vista which has alot of valuable data.

Any input on my stupidity would help, but most of all advice on how to fix
this. Thanks

Regarding "...So i read up on some forums ...." - any information on a
foru8m regarding dual booting would have emphasized that you always install
the older (earlier) OS first - followed by the newer (later) OS.

Obtain the utility VistaBootPro (free download) to remedy the boot manager.

Hey AJR,
Thanks for the reply. I had a final crack at the installation and have
figured out what had happened. It seems that somehow a third partian (only 7
gbs) was somehow converted into a Primary drive.
So i think it was booting from that partition.
I found this by throwing in my 64bit Vista cd showing the partitions.
I've now deleted it and installed 64bit vista, then in manager options re-
activated my Main OS.

However AJR, i'm unable to install 64bit "XP" on my HDD unless i set the IDE
configuration to "Compatible" Which then disables my access to Vista.
Quite the dilemma. I'm going borrow a friends XP 32bit and test if that works.

If you have any ideas; it would be very much so appreciated.
Other than that ill try and post what has happened.

Another one of your ridiculous assertions - equally as goofy as your
assertion concerning system checkpoints. What is one to do if Vista
is already installed and humming along... uninstall it and start
over??

Vista can be the first OR the second operating system installed.
