Default ATIKMDAG.SYS

I wanted to post an update:

1. I'm trying hard not to reformat, so I am exhausting all other
options first.
2. I tried the latest ATI Catalyst v8.10 (driver only), and still
experienced the same problem.
3. I installed the video driver provided by MS Update and it appears to
be working much better. I will see how this turns out. With my older
ATI 2600 card, the MS drivers didn't help, but with the newer ATI 3870,
I appear to be more stable. I will see how long I remain stable.

I found some other resources that have some potential solutions that
appears to have helped many people:
'Display Driver atikmdag and nvlddmkm Stopped Responding'
'ATI Radeon graphics cards and the blue screen of death ( BOSD ).'

So, I will try these approaches if the MS video driver doesn't work.
But, I wanted to post these links in case others are at a dead end.

Default ATIKMDAG.SYS

I have fixed the problem about 95% by taking off all the ATI utilities.
I even disable a service ATI Eternal Event Service. I need to turn it
back on when reprogramming my two ATI Theater Pro cards. If I am going
to get it, the problem happens in less than an hour after a re-boot.
