Tom

There's also the problem of Outlook 97 not retaining the user
password when run on Vista. You have to type it in every time you start
Outlook.

That is not so. That issue is with Outlook 2000 and there is a workaround for that. OL 97 does NOT work on Vista. The earliest version is Outlook 98 that will work on Vista and in a very limited capacity

As far as Office 97 running on Vista. It does BUT with too many error's and issues and it also affects the Vista OS . Not a very bright idea to do this at all

If anything you can try and use Office 98 which I believe will run in a very limited mode

For the month I tried Vista before upgrading
to XP (yes, XP is definitely an upgrade from Vista) I ran
Word 97, Excel 97, and Publisher from the
Small Business Edition just fine.

Only problem was when you ran the SR-2
update, and that has a workaround:

Has anyone installed MS Office 97 on Vista? (Home Basic version)

Well, looked around at Microsoft, and they claim 97 is not
compatible with Vista... and, of course, have a link to
buy an upgrade

Thanks to everyone for all the comments... I will NOT try to
install Office 97 and, after looking at her Dell order, I see
that MS Works 9 is included, which Microsoft says will use
her existing Office 97 Word and Excel files, so I will try
that before I go any further with new software

That won't happen 'cause my sister-in-law can just afford
to buy an entry level Dell to replace her old HP that died,
so I've downloaded Open Office

If Works9 does not do what she wants with the .doc/.xls files
I've got saved to a USB drive, I'll install Open Office

Now, to replace the Office task bar that she REALLY likes,
does anyone know of a free task launcher like the one that
comes with MS Office?

Google knows all... I found a free program (at home, but I
think the name is FSL Launcher) that has good reviews, so I
will install it so she has something similar to what she is
used to using (Office launch bar floating on the desktop)

Thanks for the notes on O97 not working on Vista... John
