Try to help my wifes boss who has the following set up:
Main pc (running Vista Business) connected to the internet with a ethernet cable in to a BT hub, this hub sends out a signal which 2 other pc`s with are running XP. On one of these two pc`s is connected a Brother printer, this is conected as is asked for by a network cable, on the pc ot is connected to it prints fine, we need to be able to access it also from the machine running Vista. In Vista when you install a printer the printer in question cannot be seen in a search or even by putting in its IP address, all pc`s have file and printer sharing turned on. I have also tried to connect to the printer was all firewall disabled, no luck here. Checked the the settings on the hub, all pc`s have full access to the system. Regards Ray |

Regards Ray I'm assuming that as the printer is connected to the machine by a patch cable that it is a proper network-enabled printer? Is there a spare Ethernet port on the BT Hub? If so, just connect the printer there and you will have a TRUE network printer which should solve all the problems at a stroke... Or, buy a three-port switch and connect your hub, printer and main PC to that.... Those are the easy solutions, which in addition to solving the printing problem from the Vista machine, will also give you the option of printing from any machine without having to turn the machine to which the printer is connected, on. |

Your EASIEST solution is to buy a three-port switch, like I said.. Here's one for £9.99.... http://www.ebuyer.com/product/132456 |

Dur to the layout of the building and where the printer needs to be sited. I think you might be able to connect the printer direct to a WAP (wireless access point - set up as a bridge I think). They are quite cheap too.... This is the cheapest I could find - £23 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/132431 |

sounds like you need to set up the drivers in the vista machine for the printer. then set the URL address of the printer properties. I had to do this with my HP printer sharing it in the network. once I set all my computers to the same address of the printer they could all access it. if you go into the control panel and look in the printers, you should see if it's even seen by the computer. if it is, you can configure the settings/propeties of the printer. use the same url etc that the xp machines have. then the vista machine should see the printer on the network. I had to set my printer to a static ip address so it wouldn't change and then not be able to be seen by the computer. also, sometimes, (I don't know how or why) the printer gets set on "use printer offline". if that happens it won't print until I uncheck it. -- serpentracer Posted via http://www.vistaheads.com |
