Default Spell Checker

Have you tried repairing your installation of Office? Which edition of Vista
do you have installed? If its Ultimate or Enterprise, do you have any
language packs installed?

Default Spell Checker

If you mean the spell check language in Windows Mail...
In the main program window (not in a compose message window)
Tools - Options - Spelling
select a different language than English, click Apply, then go back and
select English, and Apply.
Ok.

Files don't change, but perhaps the default program to open those files did.
What is the file extension, and do you have MS Word installed?
