I'm at a loss here. I'm trying to network my old xp laptop using a d-link pcmcia wireless card to my vista laptop which uses an internal intel wireless chip. I can ping the vista machine from the xp machine, but not vice versa. I'm fairly certain that the problem lies somewhere in my configuration of the wireless card on the xp laptop. for some reason, my router will not assign an ip address through dhcp, so I had to set a static IP address to get the machine on the internet. The default gateway and DNS server are both set to the router IP address, 192.168.0.1, and the xp machine has a static ip address of 192.168.0.115. when I try to ping the xp machine from vista, I get the response "Destination host unreachable." The really odd thing is that the network folder on vista will see the xp machine on the network, but when I try to connect it tells me it's not a valid hostname when I run the diagnostic. I added an entry to the /windows/system32/etc/hosts file that resolves the xp hostname(hp) to the ip address 192.168.0.115. When I directly connect the two machines together with a patch cable, I am able to access the xp machine from vista and transfer files, but I cannot get the same success through the router. I am at my wits end, and would really appreciate any help y'all can offer me. -- bootninja ------------------------------------------------------------------------ bootninja's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/bootninja.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/windows-v...rk/1076604.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

Hi
For local traffic the Router per-se is not used but just the Switch part. That means that if it does not work (while direct connect works) it has to do with the way you set the Static IP, the Gateway, and DNS toward the Router. Go carefully over all the TCP/IP settings. Get rid of the Host resolution that set in the host file. and try to begin with to use the DHCP server of the Router while both computers are set to Auto Obtain the TCP/IP variables. hey, thanks for the response. I disabled the 1394 Connection that I'm not sure what is, and suddenly I can get dhcp on the xp box again. last night I got everything working, with the caveat that I can't connect to any folder on the vista machine except the Public folder. I have identical username/password combos on both machines, and password protected sharing is disabled, but I get a permissions error trying to access other shared folders. Then, this morning, I could only connect by ip address, and not the hostname which was working before, but it was still working. Now, tonight, I can't pull an IP address on the xp machine with DHCP again and I don't know why. However, suddenly hostname resolution works again when I set up a backup configuration with a manual IP. I'm beginning to think my dhcp daemon is actually a dhcp demon ![]() maybe I should start looking into ritual chicken sacrifice or something. -- bootninja ------------------------------------------------------------------------ bootninja's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/bootninja.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/windows-v...rk/1076604.htm http://forums.techarena.in |

Hi
Network setting in Windows take some time to propagate. At times it takes few boots until every thing settles down. 1394 is the Firewire socket. If you do not use Firewire for networking you can disable it. Jack (MS, MVP-Networking) "bootninja" wrote in message ... hey, thanks for the response. Thanks again for the help. I think I've got everything figured out. I can get everything working by disabling and re-enabling the adapter. I appreciate the input. you, sir, are a scholar and a gentleman. -- bootninja ------------------------------------------------------------------------ bootninja's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/bootninja.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/windows-v...rk/1076604.htm http://forums.techarena.in |
