Intalled the MS Word Viewer 2003. It works.
You should forego using the viewer program IMO and just get OpenOffice. Not only will it allow you to open all of the files associated with the Microsoft Office applications (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Powerpoint) but alter them and create new ones as well. |

wrote: Also: 1) Microsoft Works – can read and edit .doc files 2) Word Pad – can read .doc files Sorry, that's not correct. WordPad can *not* read .doc files. Both programs usually are part of the Vista package. Again, not correct. Although WordPad is a part of Windows, Works is *not*. Some OEM vendors may package Works with the computers they sell, but that's their choice. It is not part of Vista, nor is it part of any other version of Windows. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP - Windows Desktop Experience Please Reply to the Newsgroup |

I don't consider it that at all. Yes, you can get the text, but because you can't read what you call "gibberish," you lose all the formatting etc. that was in the file. Still, your pointing out that you can at least get the text there, which I neglected to mention, is valuable. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP - Windows Desktop Experience Please Reply to the Newsgroup |

Intalled the MS Word Viewer 2003. It works. To open .doc files in MS Works 8, you must first set the "type" dialog at the bottom of the box to .doc. Works will then convert the file to ..wps and open it. When you are done editing you have the option of saving in either wps or doc. -- Dave T.
