Default Need help with install of x64

We have just put together a new PC.

750a sli XFX motherboard
650watt BFG PS
AMD Phenom Quad core
1000gig Samsung hard drive
2x2gigs Crucial PC8500 DDR2 ram
8800 GTS 320mb

We are trying to get a clean install on the HD with the 64 bit vista we
bought. apparently we can't even get into the vista CD install manager
anymore to even attempt to repair. The installation bar was going fine
and than it stopped at a black screen when it finished. It booted up
with an error. Now all it does is the mobo goes through the setup bios
intro screen, a windows is loading grey/black prgoress bar...than
either nothing and frozen or it gives a error screen with some type of
error...it is sometimes even different. winload.exe I think was on
average. We try to boot of the CD again to re-install or go to fix but
it won't let us..it never even achieves the installation screen. It is
driving us crazy. We are formating the HD now on a different PC and
hoping to retry with one RAM stick only and the mother boards internal
3d card...but other than that we don't know what else to do. please
help.

Thank you
Tom

Hi Tom,

Sounds like you're taking the right first steps. A few other things:

- Make sure all BIOS timings are set to defaults, no overclocking
- Remove any unnecessary peripherals (printers, scanners, etc.)
- Check to see if there is a BIOS update for the motherboard, the included
one out of the box may be several versions old
- Run a software memory check (there is a tool on the Vista disk, or you can
run one from oca or memtest)

In addition to Rick's suggestions, if the other pc has another OS other than
Vista, make sure you delete any partition and recreate it and partition it
using the Vista one located in Advanced on the screen where you select the
location to install Vista.
