Hello, I'm about to get a new PC and install Vista x64 on it. The
problem is that I'm only gonna get 4GB RAM now, and other 8GB later
(in
a week or so).

Is there any difference between installing whole 12GB at once, or 4GB
now and adding 8GB later ... No, no difference.

What makes you think you should have 12GB instead of 4GB? How much
RAM
you need depends on what apps you run, but most people would see
little or no performance increase by going from 4GB to 12GB.

I estimate that mostly I'll be using somewhere up to 8GB of RAM, but a
bit more can't hurt.

No, more than you doesn't hurt, other than to your wallet.

I'll be doing some pretty heavy multi-tasking.

Multi-tasking isn't much of an issue, since the task you're not using
at the moment typically goes to the swap file and stays there until
you need it again. Constant swapping hurts when you don't have enough
RAM, but the very seldom swapping multi-tasking entails isn't much of
an issue.

Just to illustrate: my
setup will include 2x30" LCD screens & probably also one 20". And
I'll be running all kinds of work-related stuff on them, some using lots
of RAM.

Depends on exactly what the "work-related stuff" is, but if you say it
uses lots of RAM...

OK. I have read the ups and the downs on the RAM issue concerning the
use of the Vista 64 Ultimate with the dual core. I have just gotten my
lap top with the dual core (AMD 64 Athlon X2 CPU) but only 1 Gig of Ram
installed. Were can I get a idea on how much it would cost me to add 3
gig of more mem so I can utilize the 64 bit system and is it worth it
seeing that 64 bit has to be were its all heading any way.??

Hi,

I'll second Gordon's suggestion of crucial.com as the place to purchase
additional memory.

Whether or not it will be of benefit to you depends on your use of the
machine. I find 2GB to be a good point for average users, gamers benefit
with 4GB or more, and autocad and multimedia editing can take advantage of
lots more (6GB+).
