I've got a notebook with a second monitor also attached. My notebook Monitor
(#1) is on the right and the Second (#2) on the left. So I go into display
settings and change it from #1-#2 to #2-#1 and all is fine for awhile. But
every five to ten reboots Vista changes the setting back to #1-#2, which is
annoying. Frequently this occurs after a software update of some sort - no
pattern on what is updated, could be MS-office, Vista, firefox, or anything.
But it doesn't necessarily happen for every update. It also occurs less
frequently when no update has occurred. I may be falsely correlating the
problem to updates because the updates are causing me to reboot more
frequently than I otherwise would.

How can I get Vista to remember my monitor locations and not reset them to
the default.

I'm on the latest version of Vista Home Premium, and have had this problem
with every previous version of Vista.

I have the same issue. I just flip them back as it is easier than searching
endlessly for the answer.

Because this isn't Microsoft support. This is a peer-to-peer newsgroup
(Usenet) hosted on Microsoft's servers. While occasionally an MS employee
might post in the newsgroups, the people who try to help you are volunteers
who do not work for the company. If you don't get an answer (and I'm sorry
but I don't have one for you either), it can be because 1) no one knows; 2)
the person who knows hasn't seen your post or isn't following the
newsgroups right now; 3) the post is unclear and/or hard to read. (I'm not
saying *your* post is unclear, just enumerating some of the reasons a
poster might not get an answer.)

If you want actual Microsoft tech support, you have to call them and pay for
it.

One avenue for you might be to see if your laptop mftr. has user forums. For
instance, the Dell user forums are quite active and often will solve
problems that are specific to Dell computers.

I've seen this happen sometimes too, but only after software or driver
installations. What I notice with my graphics card is that the connector
I am using for the main display [DVI in this case] is recognised as the
secondary display connector by the drivers. The VGA connector becomes
primary when it is being used and the S-video which I am using tends to
be tied to the VGA (eg. POST shows up on the TV before the LCD displays
it). I've even seen my entire desktop moved over to the second display
after certain software or driver updates. My speculation about this is
that something in the software installer is reseting the Windows desktop
configuration.

This isn't the case with my setup. Vista always remembers which is the
primary and secondary monitors. It just forgets that the primary should be
on the right and not the left.

Also some other forums suggested updating the video driver. I did this, but
the problem still persists.
