Hi
I need some help with networking Vista and XP. Hopefully someone from this forum can help me. I. Problem: ======= I am not able to access the Dell XP computer from the HP Vista desktop. View full map from Vista shows both the Dell XP and HP Vista desktops. However, I can not access the Dell XP desktop. From the Dell XP desktop, I am able to access the HP Vista Public folder. II. Background information on HP Vista ========================= 1. Network and Sharing Center info: Network discovery: on File sharing: on Public folder sharing: on Printer sharing: on Media sharing: off 2. Wokrgroup on HP Vista: WORKGROUP (same as the XP) 3. Firewall info on HP Vista: Both Windows and Norton firewalls are on. I have tried turning off each one at a time to test. I have also tried turning off both for testing. None worked. I was still not able to access the Dell XP 4. NetBT (NetBios over TCP/IP) I tried Enable, Disable and Default. I saw different results from browstat as a result of different settings. I need more information and suggestion here. I tried setting both Vista and XP to have the same settings. III. Background information on Dell XP ======================== 1. Local Area Connection 2 Properties, the followings are checked: File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks Link-Layer Topology Discovery Responder (I downloaded the LLTD) 2. Wokrgroup on Dell XP: WORKGROUP (same on Vista) 3. Firewall info on Dell XP: Windows firewall is on. I had McAfee Virus scan, but uninstalled it. 4. NetBT (NetBios over TCP/IP) I tried Enable, Disable and Default. I saw different results from browstat as a result of different settings. I need more information and suggestion here. Hi Bob,
Thanks for the suggestion, but it's not the XP that's not seeing the Vista. It's the Vista that can not access the XP. Waynezx "Robert L. Make sure that in the XP, file andprinter sharing is allowed.
Is McAfee a full suite; if it is, check that LAN or file sharing is allowed in its firewall exceptions. Try this: Also, run the XP’s Home or Small Office Network File and Printer Sharing Wizard, even if you had an XP Network set up prior to adding a Vista computer to it(redoing the Wizard seems to work for XP machines!). We encountered this same problem in our household only days ago. For us, the
fix was as simple as changing the Workgroup name on the new Vista laptop. You've already confirmed that "WORKGROUP" is the name in use on both machines; it may be foolish to suggest this, but are you certain that YOUR network doesn't have a different name? "WORKGROUP" is the default network name used by Vista--if yours is different, "WORKGROUP" would need to be changed to match the name of your network, at which point the two will be able to "talk to" each other. Could someone have simply typed "WORKGROUP" on the host computer as the network name, or was that the name of your home network all along prior to the purchase of this new computer? Hi Mike,
Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work. I had already run the Network Setup Wizard once, and just ran it again. It's not working. I also double checked that the computers are on the same workgroup (WORKGROUP). You can see that on my initial post. From the XP machine, I am able to access the Public folder on Vista. From the Vista machine, Network Map shows both the Vista and the XP machines, along with the Switch, Gateway and Internet. However, I am not able to access the XP machine. Nothing happen when clicking on the XP machine icon. The Network folder also does NOT show the XP. I am really puzzled! Hi Mike,
I had un-installed McAfee Virus Scan on the XP. Only Windows Firewall. Waynezx "Mick Murphy" wrote: Make sure that in the XP, file andprinter sharing is allowed. Is McAfee a full suite; if it is, check that LAN or file sharing is allowed in its firewall exceptions.
