Default No sound using HDMI cabling

I assisted a Computer Club member setting up his new Acer computer running
Window Vista Home Premium. The cabling to the Samsung 35in TV/Monitor is
HDMI. All manuals state no other audio cables are necessary. I have been
unable to start sound. If I plug standard speakers into the output jacks on
the computer, all is well....

Any thoughts?

Hello Charles,

The sound card or chip will also need to support HDMI audio passthrough
to the graphics card for it to work like this. Otherwise, you will need
to use a separate audio connection from the audio output jacks on the
computer to the monitor.

Hope this helps some,
Shawn

Hi Curious,

I do not have one, but the ATI Raden HD 4800 series support HDMI audio.

Right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and select "Playback Devices".
Is the HDMI output available to be selected? If so select it, connect your
HDMI cable, you should be all set. Be sure to put it back onto speakers
when the HDMI is disconnected. If there is no HDMI output to be selected
your system does not support sound-out on the HDMI cable and you won't be
able to send sound to it.

I should have said WHICH instead of What graphic card do you have that
supports HDMI with sound output.
I am aware of several ATI and several Nvidia cards that do.

Hi Gary,

For the best quality is to have the audio to run through '*HDMI*'
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI). '*Optical*'
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_audio) is second, and '*S/PDIF*'
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPDIF) is third in quality.

Personally I just use the standard audio '*output jacks*'
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TRS_connector) on the back of the computer
since I have no need for high quality sound. Unless you just want or
need the higher quality sound for movies or games, then it would not be
worth the costs for it over the standard jacks.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
