I've had this problem since I got my new Toshiba Qosmio laptop. I will be in the middle of typing something, and if my cursor is somewhere else in the text, it will quickly make me start typing there. 'Causing me to type the end of a sentence in the middle of a completely different one. I've read about how the cursor jumps around and how it could possibly be because I'm softly touching the touchpad. But the thing is, I am not. I have my hands positioned right on the outside of the touchpad and keep my hands levitated so that only my fingertips touch the keys. It's quite irritating when I'm typing school assignments. I usually use my Wacom Tablet as a mouse, and I cannot figure out how to shut off the touchpad in case it is that. What I'm asking is, is there something wrong with a driver in my computer or is it my touchpad? -- AsukaSaruwatati |

I have my hands positioned right on the outside of the touchpad and keep my hands levitated so that only my fingertips touch the keys. Absolutely loads of people report this problem, and it is ALWAYS on laptops with touchpads, and ALWAYS when they are typing on the laptop keyboard. Despite your efforts, I'm certain the ball of your thumb is brushing the touchpad occasionally, causing a 'click' to register, moving the insertion point. I've suffered this problem myself with touchpads, and it's a bloody nuisance. There are two solutions. Buy a separate keyboard (or borrow one). This will prove beyond doubt that the problem only occurs when typing on the laptop's own keyboard. You will also find it much nicer to use than the built-in keyboard. The second solution is to disable your touchpad. Go into Control Panel, select Classic view, and then Mouse. You should find a tab for the touchpad. It occurs to me that your laptop might even have its own Touchpad entry in Control Panel - it all depends on the drivers. Anyway, the basic idea is to find the Hardware tab, then Driver | Disable. Remember to re-enable before taking the laptop on the road! Honestly, though, I strongly recommend the first option: buy a keyboard for use when you are at your desk. It is so much better. SteveT |
